Gothenburg is steeped in Swedish history and culture. These are some of Gothenburg's main attractions, including its harbour, avenue and world's largest maritime museum.
Gothenburg lies on the west coast of Sweden at the mouth of the Göta River. Sweden’s second city is steeped in history and culture, but at the same time it embraces modern life. Gothenburg has a cosy feel to it, with its tree-lined avenue stretching from the cultural square at one end down to the harbour at the other. This city has countless treasures to offer, including the five below that all lie within easy reach of the main avenue.
Getting around in Gothenburg is very easy, as there are countless trams that rattle through the city and a good network of cycle lanes. Beginning your tour around Gothenburg at Götaplatsen, the top of the avenue (Avenyn), you will find yourself surrounded by cultural buildings, including a theatre, art museum and concert hall. Standing next to the fountain of Poseidon, you can take in the view of the long avenue, stretching almost a kilometre down to the harbour at the opposite end. Avenyn is lined on either side of the road with trees and during the summer months people sit soaking up the atmosphere of the city outside the many cafés. In the winter people tend instead to revert to the cosy underground cafés for a hot drink.
As you make your way down Avenyn you will come across the nineteenth century Trädgårdsföreningen Park. Once you enter into the park, with its acres of beautiful gardens and lawns it is easy to forget that you are in the centre of a city. The sweet aroma of the rose garden will transport you away from the rush of any city centre. The park is home to the restored Palmhuset, which was built in 1878. This is a huge greenhouse, which houses many varieties of tropical plant.
Far from being just the largest amusement park in Scandinavia, Liseberg offers entertainment to almost any age group. For those that want a wild night out, the 36 rides on offer should satisfy their appetite. For those of a more serene taste, try one of the restaurants, followed by a play. As part of an evening stroll down Avenyn, visitors can take in the flower garden in Liseberg. If that isn’t enough this year sees the opening of a new audio- visual centre, that will incorporate film, music and theatre.
At the far end of the Avenue the distinctive Utkiken or lipstick building, as it is commonly known looms up over the harbour. Having walked down Avenyn, you are probably in need of a drink and where better to sit back and enjoy the view of Gothenburg and the harbour, but at 86m above sea level in the lipstick building. Having taken in the sights that Gothenburg has to offer, look in a different direction and you will see the archipelago. The tiny islands that make up Gothenburg’s archipelago look stunning from this height.
For a taste of life on the sea, you couldn’t go to a better place. The Maritime Museum is the largest floating museum in the world and has 19 different boats for the visitor to explore. Models of people going about life on their ship, accompanied by the sound effects brings the museum to life. The excitement of climbing down into a submarine gives you a real taste of life under the sea.
These are just a few of the attractions on offer in Gothenburg. For a break in a city, where there is plenty to do, but still a laid-back atmosphere it has a lot to offer everyone.
