Travellers who love adventure and seafood can indulge in their passions on a Swedish lobster safari, where boat passengers may catch and then prepare their lobsters.
Lobster safaris are more than just a boat ride. A safari offers its clients the opportunity to experience what it’s like being a lobster fisherman. Heading out to sea, braving the elements, and checking the lobster traps. Clients should be prepared for potentially wet and windy weather conditions and a bumpy boat ride, depending on the swells. What Happens on a Lobster Safari?Fishing for lobster on a lobster safari, which can last all day, begins with the gear. Passengers may be required to don a security outfit, a hat and gloves. The security outfit is designed to keep passengers warm, and it’s also buoyant. A group should be briefed on what to do just in case someone falls overboard. The ride out to the fishing site on a fishing boat, based on the swell of the waves, can make it a challenge for passengers to keep their balance on their boat. However, they may find it a rush to sit at the front of the boat when it’s plowing through the water at a good clip. Fishing for Lobster on a Lobster SafariAt the fishing site, passengers can pull up lobster pots to check if they have caught anything. Besides lobsters, crabs may make their way into the pots, as well. Pulling up the pots requires bending over the boat, catching the rope with a metal hook, and then hauling the pot (it can be heavy) up to the surface. Lobsters that have been caught may have to be thrown back sometimes. If they’re too small, for example (lobsters more than 80 mm can usually be kept), they are returned to the sea. When all the pots have been checked, it’s time to head back to shore to examine the lobsters again, cook, prepare and eat the catches for dinner. A lobster safari may also include information about lobster fishing in the area, a lesson on how to eat lobster, and even a stop at a fishing village for coffee, a snack and more chat. Photo opportunities may be available on the trip, as well. Some safaris are available as part of a getaway package, too. Where to go on a Lobster Safari in SwedenThe west of Sweden is a prime area from which to embark on a lobster safari. All of the west coast, particularly Gothenburg and northwards, offer good bases from which to make the trip: Stromstad, Grebbestad, Fjallbacka, the islands of Flaton and Reso, and the picturesque fishing villages of Smogen and Fiskebackil. A lobster safari package is available in Reso, Koster, Stromstad and Grebbestad. When to go on a Lobster SafariThe best time to go on a lobster safari in Sweden is in the fall. Lobster fishing season begins in the final couple of weeks in September, and lasts for about six weeks. It’s a good time to tuck into seafood dishes at restaurants, as menus will feature delights from the sea. Lobster safaris offer visitors to Western Sweden the unique experience of heading out on a fishing boat, decked out in proper gear, to not only fish for lobster, but to bring it back to land to cook and have for dinner. Stories on local lobster fishing, learning how to eat lobster, and stops for photos and coffee may also round out a lobster safari trip.
